Manpower from Bangladesh

Why Manpower from Bangladesh?

Over the past decade, a growing number of employers from the fast developing Middle Eastern countries have shifted their attention concerning placement of jobs from a number of their original labour source countries to Bangladesh. Such a change in the outlook was quite timely and result oriented.

Hundreds of attractive reasons are there for using Bangladesh labour force, but the fundamental ones which supposedly should fascinate and employer  are that Bangladeshi labour force has the highest cost competitiveness. Bangladesh is endowed with the lowest cost yet highly productive labour force.

The wages of a labour fundamentally depend on his skill and the standard of living of the country.

The Bangladeshi labour force has the highest cost competitiveness

As the per capita GDP, and the standard of living in Bangladesh are relatively lower compared to other labour intensive countries such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia, the wages structure for Bangladeshi workers resultantly is the lowest.

In FIG 1 the per capita GDP physical size of the population, total workforce and the surplus workforce available for placement have been shown country wise.

From FIG 1, it would be apparent as to the availability of vast manpower resources in Bangladesh for immediate placement.

The prescribed wages of Bangladeshi workers are absolutely lowest compared to other countries, whether it is for an unskilled worker or a fully skilled one.

Bangladesh Government, thanks to its pragmatic and timely decision, considering the present depressed economic conditions prevailing in the Middle Eastern countries, has significantly reduced the minimum standard wages of the Bangladeshi workers for placement abroad. For reference only the wages of an unskilled worker has been shown in FIG 3.

FIG 3 : Reduction in the minimum base wages by the Government of Bangladesh

To accelerate the development of manpower for catering to the needs of overseas employers, our Government has set up multipurpose vocational training institutes at every district. Even, to cope with present demand with the active support of the Government a large number of vocational training institute were set up in the private sector. These institute were set up in the private sector to impart necessary foundation orientation course, theoretical and/or practical training helping workers to raise their skills and as such adapting them to the needs of the overseas employers. FIG 5 demonstrates the trend as to the availability of educational institutions in Bangladesh and also the students who are undergoing various trainings threat and thereby shaping themselves into a strong workforce for tomorrow.

REMITTANCE EARNED

As a result of the all out efforts on the part of the Bangladesh Government various agencies involved in the exercise, willful force and dedication of the Bangladesh support by the Government of various brotherly Mid-Eastern countries and the active support and cooperation of the overseas employers the seedling has already started bearing fruits. While the overseas employment position in other countries including Philippines, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Thailand, we are achieving a faster and steady growth in this arena and the same has also resulted in the manifold increases in the remittance by the wage-earners from abroad.

These Figures depicts the total phenomenon, year wise deployment and the remittances by the wage earner. We have now over 600,000 workers in various countries of which little over 80% alone is in Middle Eastern countries. At this juncture, our country is fortunate to have such a big number working abroad. And the proliferation is likly to continue for at least next decade.

Fig-6

Bangladesh is situated in close proximity of Mid Eastern countries. It takes about 5 hours flying time from Dhaka to any city in the Mid-eastern countries.

Traffic cost is relatively cheaper. Considering the outstanding relationship our country is having with the Mid Eastern countries, we have special and concession air fares for many a country which is applicable to job related traffic. On an average, one way air ticket should not cost a worker a sum exceeding USD 400 for any destination in any gulf state.

As almost all the airlines from gulf countries are operating to and from Dhaka, it is very convenient for deployment of the workers. There are flights every day and about 4175 workers in a normal course could be dispatched weekly from Dhaka (Please refer FIG 6 wherein airlines-wise weekly passenger / traffic capacities have been shown).
